The Question We're Currently Exploring

What’s one thing you can do as a teacher that most employers don’t realize you can do?

Teachers lead groups, explain complex ideas, design learning experiences, solve problems under pressure, analyze performance, manage competing priorities, coach others and adapt constantly.

Yet much of that experience is hidden behind education-specific job titles and language.

We are interested in how those skills translate across the wider labor market, where they are valued, and what prevents teachers from moving into opportunities where those capabilities could matter.

What We're Studying

Our work focuses on four areas:

Transferable skills

Which capabilities developed through teaching are portable across occupations and industries?

Employer recognition

Which teacher capabilities are understood, misunderstood or overlooked by employers?

Career mobility barriers

What prevents teachers from moving successfully into new roles, even when they may have relevant experience?

AI and changing work

How is AI changing job requirements, skill demand and the kinds of career moves that may become possible or necessary?

How We're Learning

We are speaking directly with teachers and other education stakeholders through:

  1. Short interviews and conversations
  2. Surveys and structured research
  3. Career and labor-market analysis
  4. Events and listening sessions
  5. Analysis of job requirements and skill demand
